Rather than focusing primarily on the performers learning their lines, choreography or performance, the focus shifts to the technical operation of the production.

During a tech rehearsal, the performers work through the show while the technical team runs the cues associated with each moment.

That might mean:

Lighting states are programmed, tested and adjusted.

Microphones are checked and assigned correctly.

Sound effects and music cues are rehearsed.

Audio levels and playback are refined.

Video and projection cues are tested.

LED screens and visual content are checked.

Scene changes and transitions are rehearsed.

Technical equipment is tested in the context of the actual performance.

Operators practise when and how each cue needs to happen.

Problems are identified and fixed before opening night.

The objective is simple: make sure the technical elements of the production work together reliably and support the performance.

Why does a technical rehearsal take so long?

One of the biggest misconceptions about technical rehearsals is that they should take roughly the same amount of time as the show itself.
They don't.
A technical rehearsal can quite reasonably take three or four times the length of the finished show.
For example, a two-hour production may require a six-to-eight-hour technical rehearsal—or potentially longer depending on the complexity of the production.

Why?
Because a tech rehearsal isn't simply about running the show from beginning to end.
It involves a lot of starting and stopping.

A scene might run for two minutes before the lighting operator stops the action to adjust a cue. The team may then go back and repeat the moment several times to make sure the lighting change happens at exactly the right point.

A sound cue might need to be checked.
A microphone might need to be reassigned.
A video cue might need its timing adjusted.
A lighting state might need to be made brighter, darker, warmer or more focused.
Then the scene is run again.
And sometimes it needs to be run again.
And again.

This is not wasted time. This is the purpose of the technical rehearsal.

The technical team needs the opportunity to identify problems, make adjustments and practise the correct response before the audience arrives.

Tech rehearsal is about getting the cues right

A production can contain dozens—or even hundreds—of technical cues.
A lighting cue might need to happen on a particular line.
A sound effect might need to start immediately after a door closes.
A music track might need to fade at exactly the right moment.
A video might need to start as a performer enters the stage.
A blackout might need to happen simultaneously with a sound effect and scene change.
Each of these elements needs to be tested and rehearsed.

Technical rehearsal gives the production team the time to establish exactly what should happen, when it should happen and who is responsible for making it happen.

It also gives operators the opportunity to become familiar with the show. Rather than simply knowing which button to press, they learn the rhythm and timing of the production.

Technical rehearsals are not dress rehearsals

This distinction is particularly important for school productions.
A technical rehearsal is not a dress rehearsal.
A dress rehearsal is primarily intended to run the production as a complete performance, including costumes, hair, makeup and other performance elements.
A technical rehearsal has a different purpose.

During a tech rehearsal, costumes generally should not be used unless a particular costume is essential to solving or testing a technical issue.

For example, a costume may affect:

Microphone placement

Wireless microphone packs

Quick changes

Costume elements that interact with scenery

Visibility under particular lighting

Props or equipment that affect technical cues

Special effects or other technical processes

In these situations, the relevant costume may need to be available for testing.

But putting everyone into full costume simply because it is a rehearsal does not make a technical rehearsal more effective.

In fact, costumes can sometimes make the technical process more difficult. Performers may become focused on protecting costumes, makeup and hair, rather than allowing the technical team to stop, adjust and repeat sections as required.

The purpose of the tech rehearsal is to get the technology right.

Why stopping and starting is important

It can sometimes feel frustrating when a rehearsal keeps stopping.
The performers might be ready to continue.
The director might want to keep moving.
The technical team may need to go back and repeat something that appeared to work only moments earlier.
But this is exactly how a successful technical rehearsal should work.
If something isn't right during the tech rehearsal, this is the time to discover it.

It is far better to stop and fix a lighting cue during rehearsal than to discover on opening night that the lighting change happens five seconds too late.

It is far better to discover that a microphone is unreliable during tech than during a live performance.
It is far better to realise that a video cue needs adjusting while there is still time to fix it than when hundreds of audience members are watching.

Every problem identified and solved during technical rehearsal is one less problem for the live show.

Technical rehearsal is a team effort

A successful tech rehearsal requires cooperation between the director, performers, stage management and technical crew.

Everyone needs to understand that the rehearsal may move at a much slower pace than a normal rehearsal.
The technical team needs time to make changes. The director needs time to make creative decisions.

Performers need to understand that they may be asked to repeat a section several times. Stage management needs to coordinate the process and communicate what is happening.
And everyone needs to remain patient when something needs to be fixed. The goal isn't to get through the rehearsal as quickly as possible.

The goal is to make the production better, safer and more reliable.

 <td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:50%;
